WebMay 4, 2015 · The thing is that as the valves and seats wear the clearances get tighter. Tighter valves will not make any new noise. When the intake valves get too tight they will cause hard starting and poor idling. When the exhaust valves get too tight they will also cause hard starting and eventually get hot enough to start melting - not pretty. In simple terms, the more clearance they have, the later they will open, and the sooner they will close relative to the movement of the piston. WebA lot of sources will have you set them to .06, but from my experience that seems to make them noisy. the exhaust should be .002 more than your intake. I use .005 on the intake and .007 on the exhaust for a racing engine. But if you look on the sticker on the engine, it'll usually tell you what they recommend.
