Seems that the distance was causing the missing at higher RPM. Such a simple cure for a perplexing problem. I figure during the install of the motor the CPS must have been hit or changed. If you are referring to the balance weights, the flywheel is keyed by having one bolt slightly off the pattern allowing it to fit on only one way. Larry. The only engines that use the 50oz imbalance is the 82 and later 5.0 HO. Installing the flexplate backward is unlikely because there is a raised lip on the center hole and it won't sit flush against the crankshaft flange.

With the starter bolted in place and the starter drive gear not engaged try to slide the drill bit between the top of a tooth on the flexplate and starter shaft.
