WebSpeaking from experience, Codsworth is best left in Sanctuary. He will always close with an enemy as soon as he detects them which means that he always breaks sneak. His AI package doesn't seem to include ranged weapons because he is not competent with them. His perk grants +10 damage reduction against robots.
